What is Rehabilitation Engineering?
Rehabilitation engineering is the application of science and technology to improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilities.
Rehab engineers come to the client with a unique perspective. We have a technical background, but have chosen to focus on how to apply this technical knowledge to help people with disabilities.
We often work in partnership with other allied health professionals, such as Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech Language Pathologists. These health professionals come with a more medical perspective, and are often not assistive technology experts. But as part of a team with a rehabilitation engineer, the best assistive technology solution can be achieved.
Rehab Engineers are particularly helpful in very complicated or unusual situations where other standard solutions have not been successful. Rehab engineers are able to pull from off the shelf technology as well as create custom solutions. Also, rehab engineers are able to help integrate various technologies to provide a more efficient and streamlined system.
What is the Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) Certification
The ATP certification is administered by RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America.) This certification shows that the professional that you are working with has a knowledge of disability and how to choose appropriate technology. Also, all certified ATPs must adhere to a code of ethics and standards of practice. To find a certified ATP in your area click here.
It should be noted that the ATP is a certification, not a license. There is a wide range of individuals that can qualify to be certified. When a client is seeking assistive technology advice, you should ask about the professional’s background in addition to their certification.
